100 Years Commemorated in Gold
The First World War was the first major global conflict, it was also a period where Britain faced losses of over a million men as a direct result of the war. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first world war a special gold coin has been issued by the Government of Gibraltar.
The design depicts the Menin Gate which bears the 54,389 names of UK and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient before 16th August 1917 and have no known grave. The inscription reads ‘AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN – IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN’.
